It's time to put your money where your mouth is, on today's Alley Oop - 30 April 2020

Image
And the insults to the great Alley Oop's character continues with him behaving like a childish dolt begging for money for some ice cream. He's such an idiot that he wonders why the ice cream truck's song comes from inside the house. Because he's such a brainless buffoon that he cannot grasp that an ice cream truck cannot be inside a house. And even then, like a mentally impaired child, he goes begging for money for some ice cream. He begs for money with the porter who was tipped for carrying their bags to their rooms. And it wouldn't surprise me if this new Oafy Oop would put that money in his mouth and try to eat it too. What an utter humiliation of the great Alley Oop character. Just what is wrong with these people and why are they doing this to Alley Oop? It appears as if the writer personally despises Alley Oop and wants to purposely destroy the comic. And if not, then instead of silly shenanigans like removing comment boards from comics, it's time...

No place for Alley Oop classics and original fans?

Image
It makes one wonder... After the Alley Oop board, now that the Trucutu boards have vanished too, the true Alley Oop fans are left with no place to express themselves or to share the classics. Okay, they can express themselves here, but where does one go for the Alley Oop classics ? It makes one wonder that why does the current regime despise the long time Alley Oop fans so much. Many moons have passed, but yet many of the classics haven't been updated for Alley Oop, with large gaps that exist today between the classics on the Go Comics site. It makes one wonder that were the current creators jealous that fans were more interested in the classics than with their new nonsensical version? It makes one wonder that is that why they silenced both the boards where the fans shared the classics? It makes one wonder that why are people deprived of the classics. With book readers and newspapers fading away, and the digital medium taking over the preferred medium of comics readers an...

On today's Alley Oop - 29 April 2020

Another bunch of non sequiturs, as usual. So Oop knows all about Fenway Park? How? And why? Maybe for the concession stands but when would he have learned about those? The eating obsession continues with Oop also knowing, for some reason, what the sound of an ice cream truck is, and Doc's favourite also. Hard to say what he is going to pay for the ice cream with, maybe just strong arm the poor ice cream truck driver? Or if the driver is a fan of the NuOop and recognizes the dimwit, he may just comp the ice cream? For better or worse, we are stuck with this NuOop until Joey gets tired of writing it. John Glynn certainly chose her personally so he's not likely to pull the plug on it, although perhaps that would be the best thing for this moribund version of the strip. (Something really screwy with the type today. For some reason, the middle paragraph insists on being different from the first and last, no matter what changes I make. Oh well, at least it's readable so that...

On today's Alley Oop - 28 April 2020

Well, today's strip (strictly referring here to the rebooted strip) is actually a pretty decent gag-a-day. Not an adventure strip at all, but for a gag-a-day strip, this one wasn't bad. Let's hope there actually is a story that can be followed over the course of a month or so. Not keeping my fingers crossed however I guess that's damning by faint praise, but whatever. 😉

Heart of the city Apr 27

Image
On the Comics I Don't Understand (CIDU) blog, CIDU Bill posted about a change of artist / writer on the "Heart of the City" strip, which I had never heard of. His post can be found at:   https://godaddyandthesquirrelmustbothdie.wordpress.com/2020/04/27/seriously-why-not-just-start-a-new-strip/#comments  and that title says it all - if you are going to change everything about the strip and the appearance of the characters, why not just create a new strip? The answer, of course, is corporate greed as the syndicate has an established name to provide to subscribing newspapers which is easier than trying to peddle other strips. Who knows - maybe nobody notices.  Anyway, there are a lot of posts today on the strip's board and long-time fans don't seem to be happy   https://www.gocomics.com/heartofthecity/2020/04/27  after just one day. Of course, on yesterday's board the pious Idiot pontificated with his usual dig at AO fans

Rick O'Shay for David

These are the scans from Unca's link to the Menomonee Falls newspaper of one of the best adventure/Western comic strips ever. Very good quality scans. Each file is a week of strips. Some weeks are missing due to corrupted zip's on the library site, but the basic story is easy to follow. If only the new Oop was written like this.😒 This is from my personal Google drive: https://drive.google.com/file/ d/1KMAtpGOcBp0dogHC9Xwiueje- JILZpOG/view?usp=sharing

On today's Oop - 27 April 2020

Don't recall Oop ever getting defensive about Ooola, except for the time in the Bender era (too lazy to look it up) when Ooola had some character who liked her and Oop came up with some berries or some such that put spots all over the guy's body. Sometime after 2009. Guess we'll see how this new robot fits in the picture of this (possibly) good arc with the pencil device.

Portly post

Image
This is the April 17 "Ask a Portly Syndicate Person" strip, which is a reprint of the July 9 strip from last year: And here is a response, including "Idiot's" usual putdown: Interestingly, if you click on John Glynn's profile, he has "Alley Oop" on his list twice. Maybe he's the guy behind goosing the numbers. Also, on Lemon's profile, he follows "Trucutu"so it won't take much to close down the comments there.

Alley Oop - The MU exhibits

For those who have heard of but not read these, here is the link to the main page. Lots of good info for real Hamlin Alley Oop fans. Big Ups to Cartoonosaurus for the link and reminder to post: https://library.missouri.edu/exhibits/alleyoop/alleyoopintro.htm

On today's Oop - 26 April 2020

Not much to say about the strip today, but a nice touch by Lemon is the use of the Time Machine from the 1960 movie in the title. https://www.auctionzip.com/auction-lot/The-Time-Machine-1960-Full-Size-Prop-Time-Mac_4C84FE5804/

A cunning collusion with Aliens, on today's Alley Oop - 25 April 2020

Image
Just when I thought no more Giorgio memes, it looks like there's scope for some more. We aren't done with the aliens story on the new Oop, but in a bizarre way, of course. I thought this asinine ancient alien arc was over, but it appears that there's more to what meets the eye. Just what the ancient astronaut theorists had always suspected, them aliens are up to something! Although this story appears to have some potential here, but given their track record so far.... Well, let's just wait and see, but I'm not keeping any high hopes, to be on the safer side. But there's something very contradictory in today's strip. The obnoxious billionaire Copious scoffs at the pencil given by the alien, which Wonmug and team had retrieved from ancient Egypt. In his own words, Copious exclaims : "Just a pencil. Ha!", and before that, he mocks that all they had got him was this lousy pencil. But then suddenly, a holographic projection of the little ...

Dan Davis draws Alley Oop

Image
Back in the late '90s there was a very limited run of a then-new Alley Oop comic book with work by Jack Bender, Dave Graue and a guy named Dan Davis. Davis was a huge fan of Alley Oop and worked briefly on the Alley Oop Sunday page with Bender. He currently is the artist on "Crankshaft" and recently published a new action comic book called "All Luck Comics". I came across this example of his artwork: I also found this post which clearly shows how much he likes our favorite caveman: Dan Davis  Says: January 5th, 2018 at 1:51 PM Beau that was great! I went right down memory lane with you recalling in the early 90’s sweating over every line of Guy Gardner hoping I was getting it right! I have my own lost story of misplacing a V.T.Hamlin original Alley Oop daily strip and letter he sent me when I was 10. He was very gracious and wrote a two page letter telling me about an upcoming story on Astrology he was planning. I had pulled it out from its safe sp...

Original Hamlin art

We all have read of the great amount of Hamlin material at Missouri University. But were you aware that Syracuse University has a large collection of original Hamlin work? Well over half the output from 1966 -1968 is in this collection. https://library.syr.edu/digital/guides/h/hamlin_v_inv.pdf

A clip of Hamlin walking, resembling what Oop would have looked like

Awhile back I mentioned a home movie clip of Hamlin walking with a bit of a swagger, in which he, to my eye, resembles what Oop would look like. Unca's recent find of some mention of Graue's artwork reminded me of that. As Graue had said in an earlier clip, when Hamlin drew the strip, he would often make a face to get the look of what Oop should look like if he was angry, quizzical, etc so he could get the facial expressions of Oop to look accurate. Oop was really an alter ego of Hamlin's in many ways. This clip is from the Caveman DVD. Much thanks to Cartoonosaurus for the link and reminding me of it. The narrator is Hamlin's daughter. https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7thffm

Twenty questions

Image
In today's wacky find, Deve Graue answers twenty questions. Who out there knew his first name was really Fremont? This item is being auctioned on ebay for $150 so be sure to get your bid in.

On today's Oop - 23 April 2020

Not much to say about the apparent end of yet another woeful "adventure" that just kinda quits while it's behind. Essentially an extended gag-a-day is what the stories are and are likely to continue to be from what we've seen. Reminds me of being back in school where you had to write a one page essay, so you would write extra large to fill the page. Joey's trying to pull a fast one on us, and GoComics. So this idiot Copious just wanted find out if aliens had built the pyramids, and since they didn't, based on that *one* example, he concludes that there is no intelligent life anywhere in the Universe? Umm, OK. 👌 Got it. 😒 Even at the Bender's lowest points, their stories were like Steinbeck's compared to this graffiti sprayed on the wall of an alley in Skid Row. Just plain sad to us real Oop fans. 🤢

1993 Dave Graue letter

Image
I stumbled upon this on a 1993 Dave Graue letter on Pinterest. I had had no idea he had worked on any strip other than "Alley Oop".

Oop's Mental Deterioration - 22 April 2020

Looks like Oaf has taken one too many blows to the head as he is going downhill quickly in mental acuity. And Doc says just leave the ear cleaner as proof to get their money? And it's up to Copious to determine if it's genuine or not?  Copious is likely to boot them out and tell them to quit wasting his time(and ours, for that matter). Hamlin must be turning over (spinning at a high rate actually) in his grave to see this utter nonsense being purveyed under the name of Alley Oop. So sad!!😢

In Hamlin's own words

Image
This is from Jerry Robinson's (they guy who created "The Joker") 1974 book "The Comics", right next to the one on Lee Falk.

This sitcomic's staple on today's Alley Oop - 21 April 2020

Image
Inane gags have become a staple of this silly sitcomic. Today's staple gag is just a gentle reminder of that. Why are they even talking about presenting that pencil as an artifact to Mr. Copious? Wasn't their mission to get evidence on whether the ancient aliens built the pyramids or not? On the March 13th of 2020 's strip, Copious clearly says that he wants them to find proof that the aliens built the pyramids. I guess they've forgotten that, but the readers sure haven't. So what's the meaning of today's strip? Just another filler for another silly gag which is a staple now? Also, some points that anyone with a brain would ask : When Alley Oop could take a whole laptop to Ancient Egypt (See 18th March 2020 's strip), why none of them took a camera with them? How else were they supposed to get this evidence? By bringing back an alien with them? And Mr. Copious probably has enough wealth to fund a research to detect and prove alien DNA on t...

On today's Oop - 21 April 2020

Such idiocy. Ooola brings back the Alien's pencil (ear cleaner) as proof that aliens built the pyramids for some dumb reason. Then Oop found what appears to be a stapler? from somewhere and says they could use that as proof? I guess the current team believes we are as dumb as the 3 clowns that we are reading about.

A short journey back in time - in the New Alley Oop

Image
There's nothing in today's daily installment of Alley Oop which is even worthy of my time, so lemme just recap briefly what happened since the rebooting of Alley Oop which was once a great adventure strip, and the evolution so far of this new nincompoopy nonsensical silly sitcomic. It all began on January 07th, 2019, when the new Alley Oop wakes up saying "Wow! I just had the strangest dream". But the real nightmare, a strangest one at that, was just beginning. Yes, it was a real nightmare which the readers slowly began realizing. We see King Guz trying to fight off a dinosaur in the last panel of the first day (January 07, 2019), and in the first panel of the next day, he runs away in the background, never to be seen again almost until a year later, but just on one day. It was a clue to what was coming -- a meaningless gag-a-day gibberish goofiness gloating itself in glee every day. Oola says a coconut fell on Oop's head, knocking him out (on 8th...

Ludicrous locker-room lameness on today's Sunday Little Oop - 19 April 2020

Image
So finally, someone notices the presence of Little Oop in their school. However, this kid called Mathlete ( groan! ) who noticed Oop isn't shocked or doesn't even bother to mention or question why is half-naked Little Oop running around the school wearing only furry shorts. I guess that's not something kids these days think is odd? I wonder if anyone would even notice or get gobsmacked if a monster was hanging around in that school. So I guess this is an improvement to last week's nonsense where nobody even noticed the half-naked little Oop just walking into the school campus and walking past them? Well, not really. Also, this Mathlete kid who appears to be Penelope's pal, just shakes hand with Little Oop and doesn't even bother to welcome him to the school as apparently this just probably wasn't the first day of that term in the school and it's the first time he's seeing Oop in that school. He doesn't even bother to ask whether Oop...

An irrefutably infuriating installment, on today's Alley Oop - 18 April 2020

Image
It was all jokes and pun fun on ancient aliens and other things in my last post on the previous installment, but it's not funny anymore. So, I'll be cutting down on the gags except for a few sarcastic and parodying memes in-between. Today's installment is irrefutably infuriating and every true Hamlin's Alley Oop fan would agree with this. Today's installment opens with confirmation that the ancient aliens did not build the pyramids. Sorry, Giorgio. However, from what we saw in this story, we now know that the ancient aliens gave us the pencils . Now let me come to the next three panels in today's installment. Wonmug implies that those aliens were so dumb that they'd find it difficult to build small two-dimensional things, let alone building a three-dimensional structure like a pyramid. And then, he goes on to say that the only thing those aliens were mostly doing was to just get in the way and ask a lot of dumb questions. (and here's...

It's called writing.. er.. cleaning our ears! On today's Alley Oop - 17 April 2020

Image
And the greatest technological achievement by the little green alien people is... drumrolls ... A pencil. Yes, folks. A pencil. A pen is mightier than a sword, but a pencil is mightier than a whole alien spaceship fleet trying to invade a planet. Because it's called writing.. er.. cleaning our ears! So, maybe their greatest technological achievement is actually an ear bud and not a penci... Oh whatever. Nonetheless, the ancient astronaut theorists suggest that it was aliens who taught us how to write with a pencil. Just think, with the pencil, the humans would've never learnt to write on modern paper. Just wait for the next episode of ancient aliens for a detailed coverage of this breaking story. The ancient astronaut theorists further suggest that some other aliens wrote The Cookbook all thanks to this greatest technological achievement of the pencil. In any case, this great technological invention has always been useful To Serve Man ! Don't un...

Dave Graue discusses V. T. Hamlin and Alley Oop

Alley Oop built the pyramids - Now we know, On today's strip - 16 April 2020

Image
Sorry, Giorgio and the ancient astronaut theorists. Alley Oop built the pyramids, not ancient aliens . Now we know. We already knew Alley Oop built the Sphinx, however, by simply throwing a big rock on the sand (as we saw on March 27, 2020's strip). With everything in this "story" apparently "wrapped up" , I guess this is the end of these insipidly inane installments; with no explanations whatsoever to the innumerable questions that anyone with a brain would ask, some of which I had listed in the previous days. And about today's installment, as you can all see for yourselves, is so irrefutably inane that it's incomparably infuriating. Here's why : This is so loudly ludicrous that I don't even need to lambaste it. But anyways, here it goes : Alley says he build the whole pyramid himself, but some guy is taking all the credit -- As if the pyramids of Giza or anywhere else that matter, were just built in a couple of hours, e...

What's bugging the readers On today's Alley Oop - 15 April 2020

Image
So, I was right in my critique in the previous days that all this " parent trap " gag was nothing but nincompoopy nonsense. Today we know that this whole tale of "princess and the lookalike" is nothing but absolutely asinine absurdity. In today's strip, the princess bids farewell to Ooola by gifting her a jewel encrusted scarab beetle, which is actually a feeble beetle bug gag. That means that the only purpose Ooola served as a lookalike was to pull a rope and make a lousy wooden cage fall on her parents, and that we're not getting an explanation as to why was a lookalike required to do that job when just anyone else could've pulled that dumb rope. I've covered this aspect and others in a more detailed manner already on the 13th of April's review and also mentioned it again on yesterday's review too. And so ends today's installment with a bombastic bug gag and no explanations whatsoever to the essential questions bugging the ...

More waste of time On today's Alley Oop - 14 April 2020

Image
What a load of bullocks! So now we know what this is all about. Some bizarre buffoony gags on some movie and book names. What else but that? Nothing else makes any sense in this silly sitcomic. After a day in the sun, they're now back again inside the dark and gloomy palace. The princess thanks Ooola for helping her with the " parent trap " because that stupid cage trap would work only if a lookalike doppelgänger had executed it. What a big bulk of bombastic 🐂💩 bollocks. And then comes a Prince and the Pauper reference. Gee how cool and intelligent to insert such smart references. You may think so, but here's why it doesn't work and falls flat on its face : Firstly, note all the points I made in my yesterday's review on this. Now that we're refreshed with the gaping nonsense in this nonsensical sitcomic, She just trapped her parents in a lousy cage which isn't locked to the ground and is open from beneath. Why haven't they ju...

On today's Alley Oop - 13 April 2020 - I'll not be cagey about this

Image
Okay, folks. I'll not be too cagey about today's Oop and tell you that I think that it has set a new abysmal low of absurd asininity. The cringe factor is so high today that I'm bearly able to type this on the keyboard. Please gimme a moment until I finish facepalming with my bear hands. Okay, thank you for bearing with me. And now, for the brickbats. So, like I guessed a possibility the other day , this was indeed a parent trap which was meant literally. But what's incredibly irrefutably infuriatingly ingloriously insanely inane here is that what on god's green earth did Ooola being a lookalike had to do with this idiotic parent trap? Remember what the princess told on April 9th strip? If you don't please go to that day's and see for yourself. Lemme quote that for you. The princess says, " I feel like we should take advantage that we look alike. Hmmmm.", and she continues by saying, "I've got it! We should do a parent trap...
