On Today's Alley Oop - 8 August 2022

It was pointed out today that there hasn't been a review of the Alley Oop strip in quite some time. Wootietoot did an admiral job in reviewing each day's episode but he hasn't posted in at least a year. I've done a few reviews since then but found it isn't easy to say every single day that the story has plot holes, the characters are buffoons and nothing like their former selves, that the humor is basically moronic, and that the art is dull and amateurish. Over at "Stuck Funky" they have a rotating crew who takes over the comments for a week or two at a time so they can consistenly keep the snark going. I just don't have the stamina or the talent, to do this on a daily basis so readers of this page will have to settle for the occasional comment.

The current story has Ooola and Oop back in Moo for an adventure but the current Moo is nothing like that created by Hamlin and maintained by Graue. Rather than Lem and Moo being separate warring nations the Joey version has them as two "cities"- shades of Bedrock. King Guz has decided to give up the throne to "spend more time with the family" I guess forgetting that he mostly sat in his cave all day long with his wife. To replace Guz, Moovians formed political parties ande elected a presidnet. That shows one of the main differences between the writing skills of Sayers and Hamlin. Hamlin would have shown the parties being created, developed the different candidates, and shown the electionm. Joey just says it happened so there isn't anything to justify why things happened. It is the difference between "interesting" and "meh".

But the conflict for the story revolves around visitors from 2155 who have come to Moo to escape the overcrowding in the 22nd Century. Apparently time travel has evolved to the point where not only can a large population migrate but so can huge amounts of building materials so that skysrapers are built in a matter of minutes. None of this is explained nor is how the future world could sustain itself because that would be too much effort and not within the very limited abilities of Sayers. Details are unimportant as long as you can whip out the daily gag which usually involves Oop saying something stupid.And that's exactly what we have today. Sigh.
