On Today's Alley Oop - July 2, 2021
Boy did I make a goof when choosing a career. As a kid I always wanted to be an astronaut but I assumed that it would take a lot of training and education in things I wasn't particularly good at. Today's strip shows me how wrong I was and that it only takes a half-day of training. So simple that even a caveman could do it.
The three days preceding this and leading up to today shows the "Terrific Trio" going through the rigorous training leading up to today's bombshell in a series of not-so-funny gags. First (on June 30), Alley declares how easy the training is as he bumbles around with a broken helmet. It has taken me a while to figure out who exactly in the comic world the Lemsay Oop resembles and it came to me today when I read "Harley" https://www.gocomics.com/harley/2021/07/03?ct=v&cti=1011852. Except Oop is even more of a bumbler than Harley and not nearly as likeable.
The next segment of the trilogy has Ooola wondering why they don't see any other astronauts in the training facility with the joke being that they are busy riding amusement park rides around the county. Of course, the more relevant question is how did they get into the zero gravitational training room. Why aren't the doors secure? How come there isn't any security? Even if they are supposed to be temps, the security level for them would be a lot more restricted than a full-time employee.
Yesterday's gag was another example of what I posted on my last post,https://moovians.blogspot.com/2021/06/on-todays-alley-oop-29-june-2021.html. Here Doc talks about going to the Kennedy Space Center and Oop immediately thinks they are talking about Benjamin Kennedy, the food vendor who apparently makes his living traveling around the multiverse selling food to Alley Oop. How does he follow them through time? Why does Oop think that they would name a space center after a food cart vendor? Just because. Look, Joey. It wasn't funny the first time that Oop assumes that something famous is named after some everyday Joe. And, after a dozen times or so, it's just a tedious bore. For the sake of your readers, please find a different reoccurring joke.
And, finally, today's strip with the Three Stooges completing their "extensive" training and then heading off to Florida via the time-cube while still wearing their stolen astronaut suits. Ooola questions why they usually use public transportation rather than the cube even though they haven't used public transportation at all in this story. But again, the real question should be, why are they using the magical cube to transport themselves to the moon? It is really poor writing that they don't use it all of the time and frankly it looks like a plot contrivance to chew up few days when they don't.
